About Me
Hello! My name is Sarah Powell and I am an artist and art educator in DFW, Texas. I have spent most of my life in DFW but I am originally from Northern Louisiana and try to go home as much as I can. I grew up in North Arlington and Grapevine, graduating from Grapevine High School. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Texas at Arlington, where I majored in Art Education and minored in Museum Studies.
I have three amazing daughters who are my inspiration every day. As they grew up, I found I loved to volunteer. I have held many PTA/Booster Club Officer roles at their schools through the years. I’ve been a Cheer Coach, Dance Mom, planned many community events like Family Art Nights, Carnivals, Shows, Competitions, and Banquets. After my youngest started Kindergarten, I began substitute teaching and fell in love with the profession. However, I knew I didn’t want to teach just one grade. I have always been a creative person and had a love of the arts. Becoming an art teacher really combined my passions of art, education, and volunteering. I am so excited to teach my students how to find beauty in everything you do!

Artist Statement
Throughout my life, I’ve found that art is not just made in the studio. I’ve always considered myself to be an artist, but like many artists, creating art just wasn't a viable career for me for many years. However, it didn’t matter if I was bartending, planning my kid’s birthday parties, volunteering, etc; I always managed to create everywhere I was. I didn’t realize until adulthood how creative thinking can truly change your life and those around you. The ideas and solutions I came up with were actually unique. I finally found a way to embrace my artistic side, while being outwardly productive, when I started making desserts. I quickly found that cake and cookies make wonderful canvases, and icing perfect media. From there, my artistic side couldn’t stop discovering art in everything I did. I strive to learn about every facet of art; every media, and technique. Because of this, I have struggled to find one discipline to focus on. I love mixing media and challenging what is considered fine art. There is no reason that art can’t also be useful, or that we can’t take the mundane and cover it in beautiful art. My life, like many others, has not been an easy one. But these hardships have made me dream of more. More beauty, more imagination, more color, more magic, more sparkles and shine. The world can be a terrible place and I strive for my art to bring beauty to it. I think my greatest asset is my rebellious nature to find beauty in everything I do.

Teaching Philosophy
My art teaching philosophy centers around two goals; maintaining a safe space for my students to create and feel seen while teaching them to see the beauty in everyday life. The mental health crisis among children is very real and is continuing to grow. The students who need help most often gravitate toward the arts because of their innate creativity. I believe it is the job of all fine art teachers to be a haven for these students. Art classrooms should be examples of ultimate inclusivity and open to all. While the hardships and struggles these students experience can lead to wonderful works of art, the students must first have a safe space to transform those thoughts, feelings, and experiences. These students live in a world that can be a terrible place sometimes, and I believe art is one way to bring beauty to their lives therapeutically and effectively. The students must also have the tools and technical knowledge to express their emotions. The accessibility for students to make art is another way in which I think the art classroom is critical. In some ways, the art classroom is a great equalizer for students. Those who can’t afford art supplies at home work alongside every other student and have the ability to unleash their creativity. Providing art studio access outside of class time for these students is imperative. However, I strive to show my students that art is not made only in the classroom. Creative thinking can change their lives and the lives of those around them. As artists, it is our job to challenge what is considered fine art and cover the mundane of everyday life in beautiful art.
